The challenge

After TikTok was banned in India, short-video companies raced to fill the gap. In a LinkedIn comment on Tiki’s retrospective post, Ian recalled that more than $900 million entered the market while Tiki began with under $5 million. Those are his figures, not an audited funding comparison. He also saw a content problem: viewers could watch reposts without discovering Indian creators.

The product choices

Tiki chose to prioritize original local creators. The app tied reach to quality, creator progression, audience earnings, and recognition. Offline meetups and creator groups gave people a way to build relationships around the app. The early trainee challenge protected the standard, but it was too slow to grow supply. Ian describes a shift toward transparent ranks and limited starting reach, with viewers helping decide who advanced.

The reported results

Ian reports more than 100 million users, 32 million monthly active users, and roughly 70 percent day-one retention. His comment on Tiki’s company post says the app passed 10 million daily active users within ten months. Ian also reports that a Grey V distribution experiment increased creators’ video-production growth rate 2.3x. These are first-party figures, not audited measurements or proof that one change caused growth.

The lesson for another market

Creator distribution needs a path: who gets seen, how people improve, and what makes audiences return. Ranks, early exposure, local content, and community all shaped that path at Tiki. A team entering another market should test those choices against local creators, language, incentives, and trust instead of copying the India model.
